Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Complete Streets Supervisor, incumbent must retain a Class A Commercial Drivers License and will operate equipment, construction machinery, vehicles and tools. Incumbent will perform labor intensive work during emergency operation and work associated with maintaining the state highway system specializing in Complete Streets (Sidewalk, crosswalk, and bike ways) facilities including performing field site inventory evaluation and condition assessment of Complete Streets facilities. May travel to remove locations and stay overnight to meet department needs.

Working Conditions

Position located in District 7 | MTCE - Special Crews at 2532 Sawtelle Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. 90064

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

The work is physically demanding and requires stamina. In addition, the job will require incumbent to work on or near roadways with a high volume of vehicular traffic. Incumbent will be required to work with and around heavy equipment, hot and/or pressurized materials/chemicals used for highway maintenance work. Incumbent can expect to be outside in all types of weather and environmental conditions. Work load includes entering confined spaces which are commonly dirty, wet and have little to no lighting.

The highway Right-of-Way in this area is attractive to trespassers who commonly erect illegal encampments. The encampments are prone to; rodent infestation, biological wastes and illicit drug paraphernalia. Necessary shift changes will occur due to workload or weather related circumstances. Incumbent will be required to work irregular shifts, including weekends, nights, holidays and in emergency situations. The incumbent will be expected answer calls after normal working hours to respond to unforeseen conditions needing immediate attention or emergencies.  May be requested to work scheduled and/or emergency overtime due to storms, callback, special work projects, or to meet operational needs. Overtime will be assigned per the Bargaining Unit 12, Memorandum of Understanding.

Personal safety requirements include but are not limited to (as per Injury and Illness Prevention Program):
  • Appropriate footwear, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn.
  • Either long or short-sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
  • Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
  • Provided safety gear; hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirators, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the department.

Special Requirements

  • The position requires a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
  • This classification requires a valid California Class A driver's license with tanker (N) endorsement.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
  • Possession of P (Passenger/Bus) and H (Hazardous Materials) endorsements.
  • Possession of a qualified applicator certificate (QAC) for pesticides issued by CAL-EPA.
